Visiting the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome

When we visited Rome last year I was looking for new places to visit, somewhere that is out of the “must do’s” of Colosseum and Vatican Museums. That’s how I found out about the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

This masterpiece was very close to our hotel in Rome, or about 5 blocks from Roma Termini and we decided to check it out. Little did we know that this Basilica is…

One of the four greater Basilicas of Rome…

Santa Maria Maggiore

Even though it is situated in Rome, the Basilica is property of the Holy See…

Parts of the Basilica date back to the V century…

And it is part of the Unesco World Heritage listSanta Maria Maggiore Rome

But I think what fascinated us was the fact that this beautiful Basilica was virtually empty. While everywhere we went in Rome and Vatican City there were crowds, here we were able to take our time and really enjoy the visit and admire the mosaics and overall architecture of the place.

As usual, our daughter was visiting the Basilica with us and she loved it! She also loved the fact that there were no crowds and she didn’t feel rushed.

We highly recommend a visit to this beautiful but often left out of the “must do” lists when in Rome!
